Navigation Skills
1-Day Introductory Mountain Navigation Hillwalking Course in the Wicklow Mountains.
This course provides an introduction in how to walk safely in the Irish hills in summer conditions. Map-reading and navigation skills are critical for all those who venture into the hills with friends or family. Some of us like to follow walking trails in the hope that we will remain on ‘the straight and narrow’, but all too often the track disappears, perhaps leaving the inexperienced and unskilled walker lost in poor visibility or at night. In addition, hillwalking accidents are frequently caused by errors originating from poor route finding. For this reason, investing in an effective map reading and navigation skills course is time and money well spend. Above all, learning to navigate with like-minded people is fun and can subsequently increase the joy of hillwalking greatly.
This is a practical course with most of the time spend in the mountains and hills surrounding our estate. A Kippure Estate introductory map-reading and navigation day covers the following topics:
- Types of walking maps & scales
- Map symbols
- Setting the map
- Grid systems & grid references
- Introduction to using a compass
- Estimate distances
- Estimate time required
- Route planning
- What to do when lost
- Emergency procedures
- Clothing & equipment
